Tom Phillips, St George’s Chapel
Walking in…
St George’s Chapel, Westminster Cathedral has reopened, having undergone major restoration and renovation. The chapel commemorates St. George and the English Martyrs all of whom were put to death for their faith. Forty of the canonised martyrs are named in the new artwork by Tom Phillips, who has rejuvenated the west wall and vaulted ceiling with vibrant mosaics. Phillips says ‘I thought the martyrs should be given their names and be in heaven … the flames of their burning faith still bright.’ The English Martyrs all met their end at the Tyburn gallows (now Marble Arch).
