The Fitzroy Tavern

Walking in…

The Fitzroy Tavern, a bohemian hub for artists in the early twentieth century, has  reopened its doors again after major refurbishment. Among the many illustrious local artists from the Camden Town, Fitzroy, London and Bloomsbury Groups who regularly socialised here were Walter Sickert, Jacob Epstein, Ezra Pound, Wyndham Lewis, Roger Fry, Duncan Grant and most frequently Augustus John and Nina Hamnett ‘Queen of Bohemia’. John likened the Fitzroy to ‘the Clapham Junction of the world, everyone goes in and comes out at sometime or another.’

Tottenham Court Road Station

Walking in…

The station has recently reopened with Eduardo Paolozzi’s iconic ‘Underground Murals’ largely restored. ‘Diamonds and Circles’, new glass installations by French artist Daniel Buren in the entrance to the station simply echo Paolozzi’s murals. Buren was inspired by the public setting with “a constant flux of people running both ways.” He offers his artworks as “a beautiful balloon of oxygen for the spirit.” Additional artworks by two Turner Prize winners Douglas Gordon and Richard Wright, have been commissioned for the station’s future expansion.
