Further footsteps…
Julian Opie ‘Shaida walking’ 2016, continuous computer animation, on a double-sided monolith.
Opie, painter, sculptor and installation artist studied at Goldsmiths University of London, notably taught by Michael Craig-Martin, with whom he shares a minimalist aesthetic as well as a fascination with the everyday.
Opie’s simplified outline of a woman walking in a perpetual mesmerising motion is one of a series of animated human figures, fittingly placed here at the junction with Carnaby Street, arguably London’s most popular pedestrianised street. Originally installed as part of London’s Lumiere Festival and now permanently sited.
Opie’s installation is situated on Broadwick Street at the junction with Carnaby Street. Taking a short detour it can be seen on the Moss Green Walk imbetween the Photographers’ Gallery and the French House.
