A monumental crouching cuboid figure based on the artist’s own body forms a unique bedroom within an art deco hotel. Gormley wants the experience of an overnight stay in ‘Room’ to “confront the monumental with the most personal intimate experience….I want the room to be both in the city but absolutely removed from it”. The exterior can be freely enjoyed from the street, while the cave-like interior is open to the public once a year in September as part of Open House London, advanced booking essential. An overnight stay can be experienced at a Mayfair price. www.thebeaumont.com
Gormley’s ‘Room’ is between William Pye ‘Cristos’ and Henry Moore ‘Time- Life Screen’ in the sequence on the Burnt Sienna Walk.
