Antony Gormley

Walking in...

Antony Gormley ‘Alert’ 2022, weathering steel, h-6m, 67 tonnes.

Imperial College London, Dangoor Plaza, Imperial College Road, SW7.

Funded by alumnus, commissioned and created specifically for the site. This colossal squatted figure is poised, as Gormley says ‘surveying the world around it…alive, alert and awake.’ Renowned for his public sculptures, Gormley continues to explore the human form and the human condition in time and space. Here the vast geometric form is a feat of engineering, appropriately unifying art and science, in the campus of a college of scientific excellence. Gormley hopes the sculpture acts as ‘a catalyst for remaking the site as a life affirming interactive space, open to the wider world.’

Surrounded by tall buildings, in an avenue of magnificent trees, this giant sculpture open to the elements, will weather in, fittingly both organic and architectural. The making of the sculpture and its installation can be viewed here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IEfTBh4T1Os

‘Alert’ can be found on the Scarlet Walk, between number 9 Shelagh Wakely’s mosaic, and number 10 the Victoria and Albert Museum.
