Gilbert & George
Further footsteps…
Gilbert & George, infamous art duo, create artworks that explore and expose universal ideologies in religion, society and culture directly, through personal performance, images and text. They are provocateurs and although their work has been exhibited widely across the world and throughout the art establishment, they remain outsider agitators. In their own words,
‘We want our Art to: bring out the Bigot from inside the Liberal and conversely to bring out the Liberal from inside the Bigot.’
To insure they are not underrepresented and to secure their legacy, they are building an arts centre to exhibit and curate their own work. The arts centre is a few minutes walk from their home in Fournier Street, E1, where they have lived and worked since meeting at art school.
The Arts Centre, 5a Heneage Street, E1, can found imbetween Raven Row and Whitechapel Gallery on the Emerald Walk. Situated next door to a traditional neighbourhood pub the Pride of Spitalfields, the centre opened May 2023.
