Rebecca Salter Terza Rima 2011, 15 Sackville Street, W1.
Salter, the first ever female President of Royal Academy of Arts, (elected PRA 2019), printmaker and painter, was commissioned to incorporate public art into a new office development, in a street near to the RA. This integrated public artwork was developed from an ink drawing, to form Salter says, ‘a dialogue between the drawn line and the elegant symmetry of the facade.’
The drawing was interpreted in different elements of the building – screen printed onto the windows, in part backlit and also simplified in steel for a bronze coloured grille. It is one of a series of architectural commissions, all of which feature Salter’s drawn patterns, printed or etched on glass, reflecting her connection to Japanese aesthetics and infused with subtleties of light and shade.
Terza Rima can be found on the Burnt Sienna Walk after number 6, Royal Academy Schools.
