William Pye, Cristos
Walking by…
William Pye ‘Cristos’ 1993, bronze, fountain, St. Christopher’s Place, W1.
William Pye has been inspired by water since childhood and has used water as a major sculptural element in his work since the 1980s. This sculpture inspired as the name suggests by its setting, aims to reflect the sensation of walking behind a waterfall “to be surrounded by water, yet to remain dry”. Pye says the appeal of water “is its purity and clarity and the emotional effect it has upon our senses….there is something deep seated within us all that is drawn to water.”
Unfortunately this sculpture has temporarily had the water turned off due to ‘operational issues’ while remedial works are carried out. Hopefully in the near future the ‘matter is resolved’ and the water will draw us in again.
William Pye’s Cristos is to be found at the start of the Burnt Sienna Walk.
